About Us

Welcome to Sungate's Dahlias
Sungate’s Dahlias is a small dahlia garden located on the Olympic peninsula in Bremerton Washington. We moved to new house in the Summer of 1988.
Our third of an acre lot had no yard and so work began landscaping our property. Like many new homes we decided on a big vegetable garden for the coming year and terraced the backyard and installed a watering system. The following Spring Janet and I saw Kitsap Dahlia Society was having a tuber sale and our love for dahlia was born.

Like every dahlia grower the more different dahlias you see the more you just must have. Soon our vegetable garden was replaced with more dahlias. The next Spring and long-time member, Ester Flagel, introduced us to exhibiting dahlias and furnished us with display cans and a transport box.
We entered flowers at the Kitsap Dahlia Society show and I was hooked. The next several years we dragged our young family around to several shows and or gardens continued to fill with more and more varieties of dahlias.
Thirty-five years later our yard now has over 800 plants, nine varieties listed in the ADS classification book, and several new varieties showing well on the ADS Bench.
My wife and I are both retired enjoy planting our garden full of flowers that bloom from Spring through the Fall. If you have followed us on our Sungate Dahlias Facebook page, we have shared monthly growing tips for growing beautiful dahlias and taken everyone through a yearly journey in “the life of the dahlia”.
I love exhibiting dahlia blooms while Janet enjoys exhibiting beautiful horticultural baskets and arrangements. Our passion for growing and exhibiting dahlias has opened a window of opportunity to share our success with the dahlia community across the country.
